Finnish Spitz
Riverview Acres - Kawakirei
The history of the Spitz type dogs can be traced back several thousand years to an era when the Finno-ugrian people inhabited central Russia. Various tribes migrated to different areas and bred their dogs according to need, which developed different strains. One tribe made their way to the far northern regions where the Finnish Spitz emerged as a pure bred dog and an invaluable hunter.

As the centuries passed and advanced methods of transportation brought diverse populations and their dogs together, the original Finnish Spitz were mated with other breeds.

The first known Finnish Spitz imported to the United States was in 1959. The breeding of these dogs in America didn't begin until the mid 1960's. In 1983 they were accepted into the American Kennel Club and accepted into the non-sporting group in 1988.

Males should be 17 to 20 inches tall, females 15 to 18 inches. They have a double coat, a short, dense undercoat and a long, harsh outer coat. Coloring can vary between shades of golden red, pale honey to deep auburn.
