Fila Brasileiro Information
The Fila Brasileiro's ancestors were brought into Brazil by the Portuguese conquistadors. They were created in the 19th century through mastiff and bullenbeisser stock, and crossbred with the
Bloodhound . By introducing scent hound blood into this breed it gave them a longer muzzle and folded ears.
Brazilian ranchers of the 19th century were very isolated and needed a tough dog for protection, hunting jaguars and to track runaway slaves. The Fila's were also intended to give assistance with some of the wild cattle.
Fila's are a massive and powerful breed. They are known for their outstanding courage, are very obedient to their owners and are unsurpassed guardians of property.
The Fila Brasileiro forms a great bond with their family as well as with other pets in the home. They absolutely do not like strangers and make incredible guard dogs. The Fila will only make up with people that he feels he can trust.
Fila's need an owner that can constantly take on the role of
alpha. Their owner needs to be familiar with guardian breeds and be able to handle them well. This is absolutely not a breed for the first time pet owner or novice pet owner.
These are very large dogs. They can range anywhere from 150 to 200 pounds. They tend to be always on guard. Some owners claim that you cannot socialize a Fila to like people but you can obedience train them so that you are in control. This is not a breed you would want to freely take out in public to mingle with crowds- they are not a people breed. They enjoy their family, but tend to have a hatred for strangers.
Health problems associated with the breed include
Hip Dysplasia, and
bloat.
