Field Spaniel Information
![]() |
The Field Spaniel was established by repeated crossings of the Welsh Cocker with the Sussex Spaniel. Later, through efforts of Mortimer Smith, the breed was improved. They took on a type which all who are interested in sporting spaniels admire. The Field Spaniels of today are direct descendants of four dogs.
It was very difficult to establish the modern Field Spaniel in the United States due to the need for the introduction of the English Springer Spaniel and Cocker Spaniel crosses in order to eliminate certain traits. This practice rendered many dogs ineligible for registration with the American Kennel Club.
In the early 1880's when the Cocker Spaniel was introduced to America, the sole distinction between the Cocker Spaniel and the Field Spaniel for show purposes was only of size. Any dog over 25 pounds was a Field Spaniel and those under 25 pounds was a Cocker Spaniel. This continued until 1901.
Field Spaniels are unusually docile, very sensitive and fun loving. They are independent and smart with a great love for human companionship.
Male Field Spaniels should be 18 inches tall, females 17 inches. They should weigh between 35 to 50 pounds. Their coat is long, flat and glossy. Coloring can be black or liver roan with tan markings. The coat requires brushing several times a week and professional trimming every few months.
