English Cocker Spaniel Information
![]() |
Before the 17th century, all members of the sporting group were designated merely as spaniels. Gradually the differences in size began to impress those who used the dogs for hunting, with the result that the larger dogs were soon springing game and the smaller ones hunting woodcock. The names Springer Spaniel and Cocker naturally followed. In 1892, the Kennel Club finally recognized them as separate breeds.
Before and after their separation in England, Springers and Cockers were born in the same litters. Size alone was the only thing dividing these two breeds. They had the same heritage, colorings, hunting skill and much of the same general type.
Males should be 16 to 17 inches tall and weigh 28-34 pounds. Females 15-16 inches tall, 26-32 pounds. Their coats will require regular combing and brushing as well as trimming about every 6 to 8 weeks.
