Cirneco dell'Etna Information
The Cirneco originated in Sicily. Most agree that the origins lie among the ancient Egyptian prick-eared dogs. Bas-reliefs discovered along the Nile and dated back around 4000 BC show what could be the Cirneco today.
Most likely, the Phoenicians spread these prick-eared hound type dogs as they sailed along their routes between northern Africa and the Mediterranean coasts. Ancient records of hounds with similar ears and a pointed muzzle are found in many countries in that part of the world.
They are a small hound used for hunting rabbits. They tend to be very affectionate, friendly and easier to train than some of the other sight hounds.
Males should be 18 to 19 inches tall and weigh 22-26 pounds, females 16.5 to 18 inches and weigh 15 - 22 pounds. Their coat is smooth on their head, ears and legs, longer on the body and tail. Coloring can be tan, sandy, and various shades in between.
There are no known health problems with the breed.
