Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested evolved from African hairless dogs and were bred down in size by the Chinese. For centuries, Chinese sailors sailed the seas with the dogs on board and puppies were frequently traded with local merchants when they would port.

During the time of the plagues that originated in China, the hairless dogs were stowed on board ships to hunt rats and mice which were heavily infested with fleas that carried the disease.

The breed has been known by many names, the Chinese Hairless, Chinese Edible Dog, Chinese Ship Dog and Chinese Royal Hairless.

The Chinese Crested comes in two varieties, the hairless and the powderpuff. The Hairless should have hair only on its head, feet and tail. The Powderpuff is born fully coated. They may seem like they are two different breeds, but if a Hairless is bred to another Hairless, or a Hairless to a Powderpuff, they can produce either type. However, if two Powderpuffs are bred, they will always produce the Powderpuff type.

Many Chinese Cresteds become very fearful of strangers if not properly socialized when young. They do very well with dog friendly children, however due to their small size, children must be careful not to step or fall on the dog.

Chinese Cresteds are very fine-boned, elegant and graceful dogs. They are usually 11-13 inches tall and they can be any color or any combination of colors.

The hairless variety is prone to acne and must be kept clean and dry. They don't like cold or rainy weather and should wear a sweater in cold conditions, but not made of wool, as many dogs are allergic to this material and will break out. The lighter colors sunburn easily, which leaves them susceptible to skin cancer.

Both parents should have yearly CERF certificates (eyes) and be screened for luxating patella. Chinese Cresteds are sensitive to anesthetics and vaccines. Be sure that your vet is familiar with this issue with the breed.

Keep in mind that if you purchase your Chinese Crested from a reputable breeder, you are much less likely to encounter health and temperament issues.
