 Cesky Terrier

The Cesky (CHES-KEE) Terrier is one of the more recently developed breed of terriers. Although their numbers are few in North America, they have a large folowing in their homeland, the Czech Republic and in Holland, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries. The Cesky Terrrier, sometimes referred to as the Bohemian Terrier, was developed in the Czech Republic by noted geneticist Frantised Horak.

The Cesky Terrier is a small sturdy dog that is longer in body than in leg. The Cesky exhibits far less aggressiveness that the typical terrier breeds. He should be a pleasant dog, of moderate activity level, happy in the company of children, adults and other dogs. Of average intelligence, the Cesky can be easily obedience trained. The Cesky responds well to positive motivational training (food reward) more than heavy correction. Not as vocal as some terriers, the Cesky will announce the approach of a visitor or anything unusual it may see. He is alert, friendly and a pleasure to live with.

The Cesky is a result of the crossbreeding of the Sealyham Terrier male and a Scottish Terrier female, and first became known in 1949. They desired to develop a light, short-legged hunting terrier with drop ears, that was easy to groom and train. They were designed to hunt fox and badgers in groups, go to ground and fit in the burrows that were too small for the Sealyham and Scottish Terriers. Though they were designed as a hunting dog, today they are mostly companions.

The Cesky Terrier is a rare breed that is a short legged, long haired terrier. They have a long body- the ideal body length is 17 inches for males and 15 3/4 inches for females. They are between 10-12 and a half inches tall and weigh between 13-22 pounds.

Their coat is long, fine and slightly wavy with a silky gloss. They are always groomed with clippers- no hand stripping that is required with many of the terriers, which makes them fairly easy for pet owners to keep in condition. They have two color varities: grey-blue, which ranges from silver to charcoal (puppies born black), light coffee-brown (puppies born chocolate). In both varieties, yellow, grey or white markings are permitted on the head (beard or cheeks), neck, chest, belly, limbs, and around the vent. There are times when there is also a white collar or a white tip on the tail, but the basic color must always be predominate.

The Cesky Terrier is playful yet protective, sporty yet calm. A sweet and happy dog that is good with children. Patient and brave, they are very loyal, obedient and courageous dogs. Intelligent and more trainable than many other terriers. They are easy to handle. It is important to socialize a puppy, letting it meet with various people and different animals in positive circumstances to experience a variety of situations to enable it to grown up to be a happy adult. They love people, especially children and are fairly friendly with strangers, but like most terriers, it is feisty, stubborn and fearless. This sociable dog gets along well with other dogs and with other household animals. A good dog to travel with. It is an excellent companion dog that is capable of playing with children, yet at the same time being an attentive and threatening house guard. They are well balanced dogs, not aggressive, very pleasant cheerful companions and easy to train. They tend to be somewhat reserved when it comes to strangers.

Cesky Terriers have a mind of their own. They are not Golden Retrievers. Though more amenable to training than some other terriers, they must still be taught at an early age that they are not the rulers of the world. The toughness that makes them suited to killing vermin can frustrate you when you try to teach them anything. Cesky Terriers can be stubborn and manipulative. You must show them, through absolute consistency, that you mean what you say.
