Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Information
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has been shown playing with children in paintings as far back as the 15th and 16th century. They were never a breed that was used for working, they have always been companions.
They were considered to be a luxury item since the average person could not afford to keep and feed a dog that was not serving a purpose. In those times, most dogs that were kept were only those that earned their keep.
The Cavalier was a favorite of King Charles I of Britain, which is the source of the breeds name. Charles II continued the interest in the breed and the popularity increased until the fall of the house of Stuart.
Because of the Pug being the favorite breed of William and Mary, it soon became a political liability to be associated with the dogs of King Charles, and the breed became very rare.
In the early 1920's, an American went to England to buy a pair of spaniels that had been seen in old paintings. He was unsuccessful in this search and then offered twenty-five pounds each for the best male and female of these old type dogs. The reward he offered generated a great deal of ridicule, however it also generated more interest in the breed again.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel adores their family and love being close to them at all times. They are gentle dogs, and do very well around children. Some may be a chore to housebreak and crate training is highly recommended with this breed.
They're small dogs, standing around 12-13 inches at the shoulders and should weigh 13 - 18 pounds. They tend to gain weight easily so closely monitoring their feeding is best. They're not a breed that should have food available at all times.
Their coat is very silky and should have rich chestnut markings. They require regular brushing to keep their coats matt free, and bathing as needed.
Some lines of Cavaliers carry heart problems, deafness, hip problems, dislocating kneecaps. Ear infections are also common with the breed, so ears should be checked at least once a week for any signs of problems.
