Bulldog Information
The Bulldog originated in the British Isles. They were originally bred for bull baiting, which is why the word "Bull" was applied. In the breeds early days, they grew to be so savage and courageous that they were almost insensitive to pain.
In 1835, dog fighting was outlawed in England. The English Bulldog was no longer useful, but those who truly adored the breed stayed strong. These people took on the task of preserving the breed, only without the aggression they possessed. They proceeded to eliminate all the bad characteristics of the dogs, and within a few generations, they had incredible results. They maintained most qualities of the breed, without the aggressiveness.
A Bulldogs look can be very intimidating, but they are actually a very gentle dog. They absolutely adore their family and do wonderful with children. A lot of human attention is required to keep a Bulldog happy. Some can be a bit dominating and will need an owner who knows how to show strong leadership and understands canine behavior. When Bulldogs are young, they are a fountain of energy, however they do slow down with age.
Male Bulldogs are around 50 pounds, females 40 pounds. Their coats are very short and can be red brindle, all other brindle, solid white, solid red, fawn, or piebald.
Grooming a Bulldog is pretty simple. Bathing as needed as well as nail trimming and ear cleaning. Make sure that the wrinkles on their body and face are completely dried after getting wet or they can get skin infections in the folds. Ointments that are commonly used for diaper rash (desiten) are commonly applied to the folds in order to prevent problems. Keeping these wrinkles clean and dry will lessen the chance of any type of skin problem.
Most Bulldogs are not able to mate naturally so artificial insemination is required. Puppies are not able to be born naturally either, and require the female to have a C-section to deliver. Due to these complications, Bulldog puppies may be a bit more expensive than you think, but this is due to the raised cost in breeding as well as caring for these dogs.
Common Bulldog health problems you may encounter include: elongated soft palate, small trachea, allergies, dermatitis, demodetic mange, eyelid anomalies,
Hip Dysplasia and heart problems. Bulldogs are extremely intolerant of heat. They must be kept in an air-conditioned area with limited trips outside when the outside temperature is over 80 degrees or the humidity is high. Close supervision is required during outside activity, especially in spring and summer to prevent over-exertion leading to overheating. They also are not usually capable of prolonged physical activity whether the temperature is warm or cold, a Bulldog is not for someone who enjoys taking a dog for long walks or jogging, they simply cannot tolerate it.
Keep in mind that if you prefer a quiet household, a Bulldog may not be for you. Bulldogs tend to snort a great deal while they breathe, and they snore very loud when they sleep. There are some who find that adorable, and many who do not- so be aware of what you're in for before considering a Bulldog.
