Border Collie Information

The craft of tending sheep was introduced to the British Isles by the Romans. Numerous Celtic clans then created their own types of sheepdogs to work their flocks. The dogs became associated with their regions and were known as Welsh Sheepdogs, Northern Sheepdogs, Highland Collies and Scotch Collies. The Border Collie was giving its name since it was a dog from the border of England and Scotland.
They are recognized worldwide as an excellent sheep herding dog. They are known for their obedience, trainability and natural appearance.

They're not at all a dog for the lazy dog owner- these dogs love to move and crave work. They excel in agility and obedience work and should always have plenty of opportunities to vent their energy. A weekly trip to the park is not enough- these dogs need daily activity, especially when young. A bored Border Collie can become a very destructive dog- if you don't have the time or energy to give to this breed, you may want to consider another breed.
Border Collies can be very vocal, especially when either excited or upset. A great deal of physical and mental stimulation is required with these dogs, and this point cannot be stressed enough. Do not buy a Border Collie simply based on looks, this is a breed that needs an owner to work with them, give them a job to do, and keep them active.
Due to their great trainability, they are very easy to housebreak. Keep in mind that due to the activity level of this breed, you will always need to have plenty of toys/bones available for your Border Collie to chew or else he may begin looking at your belongings to satisfy his desire to 'do something'.
Males should be 19-22 inches tall, females 18-21 inches. There are two varieties of coat, the rough coat is medium-long with a wavy texture, the smooth coat is short over the entire body. The most common color is black and white.
Border Collies are a pretty healthy breed. Hip Dysplasia is seen in the breed, so be sure that the breeder has their dogs checked for joint issues prior to breeding. There have also been cases of seizures and allergies with the breed.
