Blue Picardy Spaniel Information
In the 14th century, Gaston Phebus and Henri de Ferrieres recorded the first descriptions of the French "setting dogs" in their records on hunting, however it is very possible that the Blue Picardy Spaniel originated before that.
Over the years, the spaniels of France were separated into many regional types where size, color and hunting ability varied. Toward the end of the 19th century, the most avid and wealthy hunters from Great Britain crossed the English Channel to France with their dogs. Due to the implementation of quarantine, their dogs were not allowed re-entry into Great Britain so some hunters boarded their dogs on farms. At that time, these spaniels were bred with some of the English dogs, most likely the
English Setter and
Gordon Setter.
In 1900 the first "Picard Spaniel" first appeared in the dog fanciers' circle and in 1904 one was shown. In 1907 the Spaniel Club was founded and specific classes were formed for each variety of spaniel. In 1921, the Picard Spaniel and Blue Picardy Spaniel Club was formed.
These breeds have a very sweet and easy going nature. They are easy to live with, hard working in the field and able to work on a variety of quarry.
The Blue Picardy Spaniel should be 22 to 24 inches tall and weigh about 45 pounds. Females are generally smaller than males. Their coat is medium length with coarse to silky feathering on the legs, undercarriage, ears and tail. Coloring is blue-gray roan with black patches in various sizes. Blue Picardy Spaniel puppies are born mostly white/gray and the color comes in as they mature.
