The Bloodhound originated in England, however they reached their greatest development for usefulness in the United States. Bloodhounds have brought about more convictions for police departments than the best human detectives. One dog alone was credited with more than 600 convictions. This famous dog, Nick Carter picked up a trail that was 105 hours old and followed it, leading in a conviction. That record was set in the early 1900's, but has since been more than doubled.
Contrary to some myths, the Bloodhound locates but does not attack his quarry. They are one of the most gentle of all breeds. They are affectionate, intelligent, and will rarely enter into conflict with other animals.
Bloodhounds are large dogs, males are generally 26 inches tall and weigh 90-110 pounds, females 24 inches tall and 80-100 pounds. Their colors are black and tan, liver and tan, and solid red. Grooming a Bloodhound is very simple, they're considered a wash & go breed due to the simplicity of their grooming. Bathing and brushing as needed, as well as ear cleaning and nail trimming.
If left unattended for too long, your Bloodhound may become unhappy. When Bloodhounds are unhappy, they want everyone to know about it and will bay as loudly as they can, for hours. It's best to make sure your Bloodhound has plenty of mental and physical stimulation in order to prevent boredom.
Bloodhounds tend to drool a great deal, and will track water all through your home after drinking. When they then shake their heads, drool and excess water will be splattered all over your walls, furniture, floor. They also love to roll in smelly things outside, and then come inside and lay on your sofa. This is not a breed for someone who wants to keep their home immaculate at all times.
Bloodhounds snore, and they do this very loudly. If you are a light sleeper, you may not want to sleep in the same room with your Bloodhound.
