Black Russian Terrier Information
Approximately twenty breeds were involved in creating the Black Russian Terrier. Only the best dogs available were bred, and soon they had a dog that was stable in temperament and character, but not in type. At that time, only temperament and character mattered.
Several years later, Russian breeders bought dogs from the Red Star Kennel. The Red Star Kennel was a military kennel that was working on a breed that would be part of the national security force. The kennel mixed the Rottweiler, Giant Schnauzer, Airedale Terrier and Newfoundland to have a large breed that was not only reliable, but trainable in many different situations. These dogs were also able to tolerate the harsh Russian winters.
In May of 1984, the breed was recognized by the FCI as a Black Russian Terrier. These dogs have the ability of the German Shepherd Dog, without the undue aggression. In 2004, the Black Russian Terrier was admitted to full membership in the American Kennel Club.
Black Russian Terriers are large dogs, males standing at 27 to 30 inches tall, females 26 to 29 inches. They have a double coat, a coarse outer coat covering a thick and soft undercoat. The length of the coat should vary from 1.5 to 4 inches and cover the entire body. Coloring should be solid black.
The Black Russian Terrier has been used for many purposes including protection, herding, Skijoring, obedience, tracking, sledding, agility and conformation.
The main health concern for Black Russian Terriers is Hip Dysplasia.
