Biewer Terrier Information
The Biewer Terrier originated in Germany in the early 1980's. The breed was named after the couple who had the very first litter of Biewer's, Werner Biewer and his wife.
Mr. and Mrs. Biewer had bought four Yorkshire Terriers from the same kennel, and two of those dogs produced what we now know as Biewer Terriers. There is speculation that there may have been an accidental breeding somewhere in the line of Yorkshire Terriers and the results didn't show up until later generations.
In 1997, Mr. Biewer passed away and his wife did not wish to continue the breeding program. She gave the dogs to her family and friends. In late 2007 she agreed to a meeting with representatives of the Biewer Terrier Club of America, Inc. and shared information about the early development of the breed.
These days, breeders do not breed their dogs to Yorkshire Terriers, only Biewer to Biewer breedings are done and extensive DNA testing has been done on the dogs to assure their genetic makeup.
The coat of the Biewer Terrier is straight and silky. Coloring on their heads can be blue/black, white, or gold/tan. Their backs is blue or black and white and their chest, stomach, legs and tail tip is all white.
The Biewer Terrier is a very small dog, weighing only 4 to 8 pounds. Due to their small size, young children need to be supervised around them to be sure they don't fall on them or drop them. Biewer's tend to have wonderful temperaments and do great with children and other pets.
Health concerns in the breed include many that were inherited from the Yorkshire Terrier, such as patellar luxation, portosystemic shunt, retinal dysplasia, cataracts, dental problems, tracheal collapse, and heart defects.
The Biewer Terrier was recognized by the American Rare Breed Association, in the companion group.
