The Bergamasco Sheepdog originated in Persia. These dogs worked with their owners tending and herding flocks of sheep in the harsh mountain climate. They developed into a highly intelligent breed that combines a deep desire to please and help their owner with the ability to think for their self and figure out their own way to accomplish the goals.

Their coat is made up of three types of hair, undercoat, goat hair and outer coat. The undercoat is short, dense and of fine texture. It is oily to the touch and forms a waterproof layer against the skin. The goat hair is long, straight and rough in texture. The outer coat is wooly and finer in texture.

One may think that their coat is difficult to maintain, however they require less care than coats that need brushing. For the first year they have a puppy-coat, and that coat is soft and similar to the coat of an Old English Sheepdog. At about a year old, the coarser hair and fuzzy hairs begin to appear. At that time the coat must be ripped by the owner into mats. This process can take a few hours but once it is done, it's done for life. For the next six months, a weekly check to make sure the mats have not grown together is all that is needed. After that, the mats stay separate and become dense enough that very few things will get caught in them. The mats continue to grow over the years and will reach the ground when the dog is around five years old.

Males should stand at 23.5 inches tall and weigh between 70 - 84 pounds, females should be 22 inches tall and weigh between 57 - 71 pounds.

The Bergamasco Sheepdog is devoted to their family and tend to be very distrustful of strangers.
