Belgian Tervuren Information
In 1891 the
Club due Chien de Berger Belge (Belgian Shepherd Club) was organized to determine the characteristics of the native shepherd dogs in Belgium. They defined a consistent type of native dog, anatomically identical but different in hair texture, length and coloring.
In the early twentieth century, owners and breeders in Belgium wanted the acceptance of the additional varieties based on color and the adoption of names to designate the varieties. The black, long haired dogs were given the name
Groenendael, the fawn rough haired dogs were given the name
Laekenois and the short haired fawn dogs were given the name
Malinois. The name
Tervuren was given to the long haired fawn with the black mask.
Tervuren later became the designated name for the long haired other than black.
These dogs have been used by the police and army in World War I and World War II. Today they still show their versatility and are a tireless worker as a police dog, home protector and great herder.
These are large dogs, males standing at 24 to 26 inches tall, females 22 to 24 inches tall.
