Black and Tan Coonhound Information
The Black and Tan Coonhound descended from the Talbot hound,
Bloodhound and the
English Foxhound.
The dogs were selectively bred on the basis of color. Due to their great skill on possum and raccoon, the black and tan strain was carefully developed over several years and admitted to registry by the American Kennel Club in 1945.
The Black and Tan Coonhound trails in
Bloodhound style- determined but not at a real fast pace. They tree their quarry and bark to alert their owners that they have accomplished their goal.
They are excellent on raccoon, deer, mountain lions, bear and other big game. They are equipped to handle the rigors of winter, heat of summer and any terrain.
These are large dogs, males standing at 25 to 27 inches tall, females 23 to 25 inches. They have a short glossy coat that is coal black with rich tan markings. Grooming is very simple for the Black and Tan Coonhound, simple bathing as needed, as well as routine ear cleaning and nail trimming.
They are fairly inactive when indoors but need to have an outlet for their energy. A large fenced in yard is needed, and several long play sessions. This is not a breed for those who are not able to tolerate wet mouthed dogs. They drool and slobber and when they shake their head it will get splattered on the walls and possibly on you.
