Azawakh Information
The Azawakh originated in the Sahel region of Africa. They have been bred by the numerous nomadic tribes of the Southern Sahara as hunting and guard dogs, as well as companions. The hound's vocations were, and still are, the chase, guarding and companionship.
Relative to its native environment, the smooth-coated Azawakh mentally and structurally manifests his vocation as hunter, protector and companion. Proud, alert and attentive, he remains instinctively reserved with strangers and gentle with those he loves.
The coat is short, silky and close to the body. The fine, dry skin is smooth and taut in mature dogs. The Azawakh can be cream, dark red, white, chocolate, brindle, black, grizzle and parti-color. Males should stand 25 to 29 inches tall and weigh between 37-55 pounds, females slightly smaller.
