Azawakh

Kel Simoon Azawakhs

The Azawakh originated in the Sahel region of Africa. They have been bred by the numerous nomadic tribes of the Southern Sahara as hunting and guard dogs, as well as companions. The hound's vocations were, and still are, the chase, guarding and companionship. One cannot help but appreciate their regalness.

Relative to its native environment, the smooth-coated Azawakh hound mentally and structurally manifests his vocation as hunter, protector and companion. Proud, alert and attentive, he remains instinctively reserved with strangers and gentle with those he loves. Especially slender and elegant, his frame and muscles are visible under a dry, fine skin.

The coat is short, silky and close to the body. The fine, dry skin is smooth and taut in mature specimens. The Azawakh comes in varying colors, to include cream to dark red, white, chocolate, brindle, black, grizzle, and parti-color. White markings and dark facial masks are allowed. Males should be 25 to 29 inches tall, females should be 23 and a half to 29 inches. They should weigh between 37-55 pounds.

The Azawakh is recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, United Kennel Club, National Kennel Club, and the Continental Kennel Club. The Azawakh has been recorded in the American Kennel Clubs Foundation Stock Service (FSS) since 1997. In 2007 they were permitted to compete in lure coursing events with the AKC as well as companion events.
