The Auvergne Pointer originated in France in the 1800s. It is a large and heavy gundog, with distinctive coloration and markings. It is an important breed characteristic that the ears and the area around the eyes are black. Elsewhere on the body, blue roaning, resulting from overlapping black and white hairs are desirable. This patterning is known as "charbonnee" or "charcoaled", although some Auvergnes show clearly defined black markings on a white background.
It is thought that Gascony Hounds contributed to the breed's ancestory, althought any residual traces of tan markings now merit disqualification in the show ring.
Other name for this breed is the Braque d' Auvergne.
