Australian Kelpie Information

The Australian Kelpie evolved from the British and Scottish working collies. The purpose was to handle the harsh extensive landscape and unruly sheep. By tending these sheep, they played a great role in the development of the sheep and wool industry in Australia.

The Kelpie uses their eyes, bark and bite to move stock. A great deal of the time the Australian Kelpie will work unsupervised. They are always eager to work and know exactly what needs to be done at all times.

The Australian Kelpie is mainly imported and bred by ranchers and farmers for use as a working stock dog. In the United States they are used on all types of livestock.

They are very alert, eager and highly intelligent. They are extremely loyal to their family and to their job. They have a natural instinct for working livestock, both in a confined are and in open land.

Males should stand at 20 to 23 inches tall, females 17 to 20 inches. They have a short outer coat that is straight and weather resistant. Their coat can be longer on the neck and hind legs. Coloring can be black (with or without markings), blue, red or tan.
