Sad But True

Sad But True

There isn't a day that goes by that I haven't heard pet owners tell the tale of how they got their pet. Some of them are the heart warming stories about how they saved their pet from their local shelter or rescue group, but others are tales of lies told by unethical breeders just to make a quick puppy sale.

Breed Purchased Details
2 Schnoodles
(Schnauzer & Poodle mixes)
Location: Indiana
A woman came in to where I work yesterday, with two tiny puppies in her arms. At first glance I thought one was a badly bred Yorkshire Terrier, and the other I believed to be was an Affenpinscher. The woman informed me that they were both Schnoodles, and were littermates. The one I believed to be an Affenpinscher was solid black, and the one I thought was a Yorkshire Terrier was black and tan. I figured that the pups were about 8-10 weeks old, but as it turns out, they were nearly a year old.. and weighed no more than 5 pounds each. The woman told me that her the breeder she purchased them from (at over $1,000 each pup) told her that the Schnoodle was going to be a recognized breed by the American Kennel Club very shortly (which is a lie) and that getting these 2 puppies at this price before they were recognized was a real price saver for her. She claimed that once this "breed" was recognized, the price would literally double. The breeder also told her that since these puppies were so small, the price should be much higher, but she felt they were going to a good home and since the woman wanted two of them, she would sell them at a discounted rate.

If the woman who was purchasing these dogs was properly educated, this breeder would not have gotten away with this. This goes to show that unethical breeders will stop at nothing to get your money.
Peke-a-Poo
(Pekingese & Poodle mix)
Location: Kentucky
My cousin bought a dog from a breeder in Kentucky. The dog was a Peke-a-Poo female. The breeder told my cousin that all of her dogs were registered by the DRA and that the DRA is going to replace the AKC in the near future. The sales agreement that the breeder gave to my cousin states that she cannot have her dog spayed until the breeder gets a minimum of 2 litters from the dog. My cousin paid $1400 for her puppy and just wants her as a pet, but the breeder says that as soon as the puppy comes into heat, she has to be returned to the breeder so that she can breed her. My cousin didn't sign a contract, she was just given a paper stating the "rules" for getting this dog. She recently moved from Kentucky to northern Ohio and is going to have the puppy fixed. Can a breeder state that you must breed the dog?

Editors note: DRA is short for the Dog Registry of America, and they will pretty much register anything. The DRA will in no way ever replace the AKC. Unless this puppy was sold on a co-ownership contract, I doubt that this breeder will have a leg to stand on when it comes to the breeding of this dog. Plus, if your cousin didn't actually sign anything stating she would breed the dog, she is not legally bound to do so.
If you have a similar story about an unethical breeder, plese click here to email us with the details and we will print it here!
Please note that you can give us the breeders name and details, but we cannot print them on this website due to legal reasons. If the breeders name is given, we will put it on our list of those to watch out for, and if they ever submit a listing for this site the information you provide will come into play when we decide if we should list them.

When emailing your details, the following will be printed:
Breed
Details of what the breeder did/didn't do
Your name (unless you specify that it should not be printed. Your email (unless you specify that it should not be printed.
