Appenzell Cattle Dog Information
In 1853 an Appenzeller Sennenhunde was described in a book as a high pitched barking, short haired, medium sized cattle dog.
In 1895, Max Siber asked the Swiss Cynological Society to do something for the breed. Three years later, money was given to support the breeding of the Appenzeller Sennenhunde. They formed a special commission and a breed standard was being worked on.
In 1906, the Appenzeller Sennenhund Club was founded. The purpose of the club was to preserve and promote the breed in their natural state. By 1914, there were enough similar dogs to set a breed standard. The original breeding area was the Appenzell region but today the breed is all over Switzerland and in many European countries.
Though the breed has found many admirers, the breeding stock is still very small. Responsible and careful breeding has established the breed and their outstanding qualities.
Appenzell Cattle Dogs are not suitable for those with an inactive lifestyle. These dogs are in no way couch dogs. They have not become popular in the United States.
