Originally, the American Water Spaniel was purely a working gun dog. Breeders did not want these dogs in the show ring due to fear that it would ruin the breeds reputation as an excellent hunter. In 1940, the American Water Spaniel was recognized by the American Kennel Club, however even with entering the ring, their talents as an excellent hunter have not been tarnished.
