American Bulldog
The American Bulldog originated in the United States. They are also known as the Old Country Bulldog.
American Bulldogs are a working dog that was developed for the purpose of catching livestock and protecting the property. The American Bulldog is the closest surviving relative to the Old English Bulldog.
There are two types of American Bulldogs, the
Johnson type and the
Scott type- named after the breeders who had the most influence over their development.
American Bulldogs tend to be confused with different breeds, such as the American Pit Bull Terrier. They are muscular dogs like American Pit Bull Terriers, and can also have coloring like them, however the American Bulldog has a more box shaped muzzle and the ears are typically left uncropped.
American Bulldogs are very happy dogs that seem to like pretty much everyone. They are wonderful with children, however they don't tend to know their own strength/size and may knock over young children without meaning to. The same goes for the elderly as well.
They have a very strong bond with their family and are very protective- obedience training and socilization is a must with this breed. They should also be exposed to other animals as much as possible in their puppy stage- so that they can gain experience in interacting with other animals and they wont be a problem as the puppy grows into a large dog.
They need a home with a large fenced in yard so that they can run around and work off some of their energy. Having a job for them to do is preferred, however if that's not in your plan for a family pet, long walks, play sessions, hiking, etc., should be fine.
American Bulldogs don't do well in kennel-type situations. They love to be with their families and may become destructive if left alone too long. Crate training is recommended, and the dog should be crated when you're not home to prevent him from being destructive and hurting himeself. Once he's gotten used to your routine, he most likely wont need to be crated everytime you leave the house.
American Bulldogs were originally used for hog catching. They aren't used for this much these days since most are family pets, however there are still some that are performing this job. They also do very well in Schutzhund and weight pulling.
American Bulldog should be about 75-125 pounds and stand 20-28 inches at the withers. Their coat is short, and can be combinations of solids or degrees of whites, and all shades of brindle, brown, red or tan.
American Bulldogs love to please and love to be active. They're not usually a breed that loves to hang out on the couch- they need activity! Long walks, running in a safely enclosed large area, hiking are all great activities for your American Bulldog.
Generally males are 22 to 28 inches at the withers and weigh from 75 to 120 pounds. Females 21-25 inches and weigh 60-90 pounds. The weight should be proportional to size.
Though this is generally a very healthy breed, hip testing on breeding dogs is recommended.
