American Bulldog Information
American Bulldogs are working dogs that were developed for catching livestock and protecting property. They are the closest surviving relative to the old English Bulldog.
They tend to be confused with different breeds, such as the American Pit Bull Terrier. The similarities are coloring and being heavily muscled, however the American Bulldog has a more box shaped muzzle and ears are left uncropped.

American Bulldogs are very happy dogs that seem to like nearly everyone. They do wonderful with children, however don't tend to know their own size and strength and may knock over young children without meaning to do so.
They have a very strong bond with their family and are protective of them. Obedience training and socialization are a must with this breed. They should also be socialized with other animals as much as possible in their puppy stage so they can gain experience with other animals and will be less likely to be aggressive toward them as they get older.
American Bulldogs need a home with a large fenced in yard so they can run around and work off some of their energy. Having a job for the dog to do is preferred, long walks, hiking, long play sessions should keep him happy. They also do very well in Schutzhund and weight pulling.
American Bulldogs don't do well in kennel-type situations. They love to be with their families and may become destructive if left alone too long. Crate training is recommended, and the dog should be crated when you're not home to prevent him from being destructive and hurting himself. Once he's gotten used to your routine, he most likely wont need to be crated everytime you leave the house.
American Bulldog should be about 75-125 pounds and stand 20-28 inches at the shoulders. Their coat is short, and can be combinations of solids or degrees of whites, and all shades of brindle, brown, red or tan.
If your American Bulldog gets bored, he may become very destructive. Playing "hockey" with food dishes, digging up carpeting, chewing on tables is common with a bored American Bulldog. Make sure your pet has a great deal of physical and mental stimulation and you will usually not have any problems.
Generally males are 22 to 28 inches at the withers and weigh from 75 to 120 pounds. Females 21-25 inches and weigh 60-90 pounds. The weight should be proportional to size.
Though this is generally a very healthy breed, hip testing on breeding dogs is recommended.
