The Alaskan Klee Kai

This miniature husky was developed in the 1970's in Alaska. The goal was to produce a small husky-type dog that excelled in temperament and health. The Klee Kai became available to the public in late 1988. Strict breeding regulations are enforced regarding these little dogs in order to ensure the standards. There are three sizes of Alaskan Klee Kai. The Toy size is 10 pounds and under; The Miniature is 10-15 pounds, and the Standard is 15-20 pounds. They were developed primarily form the Alaskan Husky., though they retain some Siberian Husky genes.

One of the most important trademarks of this breed is the distinctive facial mask, which must be clearly visible due to contrasting colors. Although the coat and color can vary, all markings must be symmetrical. The ears are moderately large but in proportion to the head. The tail forms a loose but complete coil on or just below the topline. Puppies are judged as close to the standard as possible, however, puppies do not get their adult coat or coloring until about six months of age. These active dogs make wonderful pets for those who cannot keep the larger varieties of huskies but love the look.

They come in every color and in three sizes- Toy, which is 12 inches, Miniature which is between 13-15 inches and Standard which is between 15-17 inches tall. The most noticable characteristic of the breed is their face mask which is clearly shown due to contracting colors.

They have a double coat that give it a well furred appearance similiar to the Alaskan Husky. All coat colors are acceptable as long as the facial mask is very distinct and visible.

This is a very new breed of dog- regular breedings didn't occur until the late 1980's and the Klee Kai wasn't recognized by the United Kennel Club until 1997.
