Aidi Information
The Aidi originated in Morocco as a guard dog in the 1000s. The ancestors of the Aidi were most likely introduced from Spain. They have served as a guard dog and tracker, locating game that the faster Sloughi can then run to ground.
Their coat is dense and fleecelike, offering them great protection from the desert heat and freezing cold nights in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. White is the preferred color of the Aidi, although it does occur in a variety of colors. Another name for this breed is the Chien de l'Atlas.
Aidi's are extremely protective of their home and family. They also need an owner that can always be the boss so that the roles do not get reversed. This is not a breed for the "pushover owner" who gives in to everything all the time. Training with this breed must be consistent and constant.
The Aidi is not at all recommended for first time dog owners, or a novice pet owner. They require someone who is very familiar with breeds like this.
This is a very rare breed and will be difficult to find in the United States. In order to obtain one, you may have to have one imported from overseas.
