American Pit Bull Terrier Information
![]() |
Developed from the Bull and Terrier types of dog, the American Pit Bull Terrier comes from an indisputable history of pit-fighting. The breed's tenacity and strength are unmatched in the dog world.
At one time, the Pit Bull was a much loved, trustworthy companion. People who chose to train these dogs to fight are responsible for the banning that has been happening worldwide. Part of this problem is the media- whenever there is a dog attack, the first breed the media mentions is "Pit Bull", even if the actual dog(s) responsible for the attack where not Pit Bulls, and didn't even resemble a Pit Bull. For instance, several years ago in a town close to where I live, three dogs entered an elderly womans home through a broken screen door. The dogs mauled the woman to death, and news reports were stating that the dogs were Pit Bulls. When the dogs were found, they were actually German Shepherd / Siberian Husky mixes, yet all anyone remembers to this day is "Pit Bull".
The Pit Bull is an extremely loyal dog and love to please their owners. They thrive by spending time with their family, playing catch, jogging, and solid one on one time with their owner.
American Pit Bull Terriers are very good natured, loyal and affectionate. They have been known to be aggressive towards other dogs, however this can usually be avoided with proper training. Many people confuse aggressiveness towards other dogs with aggressiveness towards humans. I have seen newspaper reports in which "concerned neighbors" are quoted saying things such as "This time it killed a cat, tomorrow it may be my children". Yet animal aggressiveness is entirely different from human aggressiveness. There is no reason to think from it's killing a cat or dog, ANY dog, not just an APBT will ever show aggression toward a human. Dogs can and do discriminate even if irate neighbors cannot. When properly socialized, they do well around children, and make great family pets. They are obedient, eager to please, courteous and intelligent- and make great pets.
You may hear the term 'gameness' when people refer to an American Pit Bull Terrier. Gameness is basically tireless courage. They are determined to take control over any situation and never back down out of fear. This is a trait that keeps Pit Bulls fighting to the death in spite of having broken bones, torn muscles, dehydration and blood loss.
Many people also believe that Pit Bulls have locking jaws. This is untrue. No dog, despite the breed, has a locking jaw. Pit Bulls do have very strong jaws, however they do not have any type of locking mechanism in their jaws.
The Pit Bull is a generally healthy breed. Some known problems are Hip Dysplasia, hereditary cataracts and allergies to grass. They can be expected to live about 12 years. A home with a fenced yard is recommended. Pit Bulls are very energetic, and not a great choice for a first time dog owner.
